Media Madness was equally exhausting and inspiring. By the end of the week I was ready for spring break and so proud and so grateful for these kids and all of our guests. And then The Seattle Times published this from our workshop, and I was reminded why I became a teacher. Ungraded, homework-free adventures in real-life learning FTW.
Below are some reflections from my students.
On our Media Madness week:
“Yes, I would recommend Media Madness because media is taking over the world and I think if everyone learned about media they would understand the world better.”—6th grader
“[Media Madness] was an amazing experience to create something meaningful and put it up for the world to see.”—9th grader
“I enjoyed having important people in our class.”—7th grader
“I learned how to take a good photo, how video production works, how to tell a good story, about the culture behind media, how to voice act, and how ads are made. I wasn’t really surprised that I liked all of it.”—6th grader
“The photographer from the Seattle Times was so cool. She told the story about taking pictures and how the meaning could be so great. She also showed us how to capture a moment without interfering.” –7th grader
“I learned that photographs can tell entire stories.”—7th grader
“A highlight was creating our photo articles since we don’t get many opportunities to broadcast ourselves as teenagers.”—9th grader
On making a short video with Pixel Bokeh on what success means to students:
“A highlight for me was having the opportunity to make a real video and look at the camera and say what we want to say as students.”—7th grader
On becoming storytellers with Lila Kitaeff from public radio’s youth program RadioActive:
“The woman from RadioActive was cool. She told us that the teens do the work and that’s so cool to know.”—7th grader
On our field trip to the Experience Music Project for a workshop on voice acting:
“The highlight for me was visiting EMP where we got to look around the museum and see the incredible collection of media but also take a lesson on voiceovers. It was really cool to see what went on behind the scenes of cartoons, commercials, and audiobooks and to see how different voices connect with different parts of the body.”—7th grader
“Learning about Digital Kitchen really influenced me because their jobs and the things they do everyday are amazing.”–7th grader
“I was surprised that I found advertising cool because before I thought it was silly and kind of stupid but now I see that it is cool and fun.”—6th grader
“I could totally picture working for Digital Kitchen.”—9th grader
